Tips for properly mooring your boat.

Tips for properly mooring your boat.

A very important part for the proper operation of our boat is its anchoring whenever and wherever it is needed.
Whether you stop for food or a swim or even if you anchor due to weather conditions you should take the following steps:
1.    First and foremost: Make sure you always carry the right type of anchor for your boat. Usually a Danforth , Bruce ή SPADE anchor is suitable for all types of small boats. Of course, the type of seabed you wish to anchor also plays an important role, as we will see below.

2.    If the reason you want to anchor is the weather, then your first concern should be to find a sheltered spot that ideally has minimal wind and waves.

3.    Calculate the depth you want to anchor so that you leave the right amount of chain. Ideal depth to chain ratio should be 4:1.

4.   Try to determine the type of bottom where you want to anchor. If the bottom is sandy or rocky, so should your choice of anchor.

5.   Do not drop the anchor when anchoring, instead try to let it play in the water as low as possible. Throwing away the anchor may seem like an easier solution, but it carries the risk of entangling the anchor with the chain.

6.    Always keep your boat stationary when at anchor. If you are on the move when anchoring there is a risk that the anchor will break somewhere on the bottom if it is rocky.
